Three Cricket Formats and Popular Competitions
Cricket has three official formats — T20, ODI and Test — each with its own character. T20 finishes within a few hours, so the pace of the match changes quickly and betting conditions take a new shape from moment to moment. In ODI, teams play out 50 overs with different strategies, and the pattern of steady batting in the middle overs followed by a late surge is familiar to bettors. Test cricket is a five-day game — here pitch conditions, weather and the batting and bowling depth of each team carry much greater weight.
For Bangladeshi cricket fans, BPL and IPL are the most familiar franchise tournaments. Beyond these, there are also opportunities to bet on the T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and bilateral series. Many bettors show interest in Bangladesh Tigers matches, especially when the team is chasing a challenging target against a strong opponent.
Pre-match and live markets for all these tournaments are available in tq's sports section. Markets open before each match starts, and in-play odds update in real time during the match.
7 Popular Betting Markets
Understanding each market makes it clear what happens with each type of bet.
Match Winner
Just pick which of the two teams will win — that is all. In T20 and ODI there is no draw, so there are only two options to choose from. For example, Team A vs Team B — if you pick Team A and Team A wins, your bet is successful.
Toss Winner
This market is about which team will win the toss before the match starts. There are two equally probable options. Many bettors use the toss to analyse pitch conditions.
Top Batsman
Pick which batsman in a team will score the most runs. If you have a good understanding of the team's batting order and current form, this market is enjoyable.
Total Runs Over/Under
Bet on whether the total runs in an entire innings or in specific overs will be above or below a set number. On a slow pitch the under tends to be popular; on a flat pitch the over is more favoured.
Handicap
A virtual advantage or disadvantage is applied to one team to balance the betting. For example, giving Team A a head start in runs changes the winning condition. This is used more in matches between a strong side and a weaker one.
Multi Bet
Multiple bets from multiple matches are combined together. If all bets are correct, the return multiplies. For example, if you combine three different bets from three separate matches, losing even one means the entire bet is void.
Runs in the First Over
You can also bet on how many runs will be scored in the first over. The form of the opening partnership during the powerplay plays an important role. This is usually offered in an over/under format.
How Decimal, Fractional and American Odds Work
Many new bettors get confused when they see odds. In fact, the same probability can be written in three ways — decimal, fractional or American format. tq generally displays decimal format, which is the clearest for Bangladeshi bettors.
| Odds Format | If Team A Wins (৳200 bet) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal: 3.00 | ৳600 returned (৳400 profit) | Bet × Odds = Total Return |
| Fractional: 2/1 | ৳400 profit + ৳200 stake | ৳2 profit for every ৳1 bet |
| American: +200 | ৳400 profit | ৳200 profit on a ৳100 bet |
The favourite's odds are lower because they have a higher chance of winning. Say Team B is the match favourite — their odds are decimal 1.50, fractional 1/2, American -200. With a ৳200 bet, if Team B wins you get a total of ৳300 back, meaning only ৳100 profit. American minus odds (-200) mean you need to bet ৳200 to make ৳100 profit.
Similar to worked example 3 used in the cricket match winner market: in a limited-overs match between Team A and Team B, Team A's odds are 1.80 and Team B's are 2.00. If you place ৳1,000 on Team B and Team B wins, you get a total of ৳2,000 back (including ৳1,000 profit); if Team A wins, the full ৳1,000 is lost.
In a multi bet, odds are multiplied: if three different selections have odds of 1.50, 1.80 and 1.90 respectively, the combined odds = 1.50 × 1.80 × 1.90 ≈ 5.13. This means a ৳100 bet returns ৳513 if all three win — but if any one of them loses, the full ৳100 is gone.
Live In-Play Betting — the Situation Changes with Every Wicket
LIVE Live betting is the most fast-moving cricket betting experience. Odds shift quickly with every event during the match. When the batting team loses a wicket, their winning odds go up (meaning higher payout, but lower probability). When the bowling team takes wickets quickly, their odds come down.
As each over ends, the run rate calculation changes and markets take on new values. If the run rate is low at the end of the powerplay, the odds on the total runs under market start to drop. An experienced bettor watches these changes before making a decision.
Live betting requires focus and patience. When things are changing fast, it is wiser to stay within your set budget rather than letting emotions push you to bet more. Reading the responsible gaming guidelines will make it clear how to manage your budget.
Football and Other Sports Betting — Where Is the Difference
Football Betting
In football there is a draw option, so the match winner market has three choices (1X2). In cricket, T20 and ODI formats have no draw — only Test matches do. Football's total goals over/under market works similarly to cricket's total runs market, but the scale of numbers is completely different. Corner kicks, yellow cards and other special markets are also more widely available in football.
Cricket vs Football — Key Differences
Individual performance markets in cricket (top batsman, most wickets) are more popular than in football. Cricket also has more in-play markets because every ball is a new event. Football markets, on the other hand, are centred around major international leagues. Cricket betting is more familiar in Bangladesh because the national team actively competes on the international stage.
Some Useful Tips for Cricket Betting
-
Choose your market based on the format
The total runs market is more active in T20, while match result markets are more commonly used in Test cricket. Understanding which market is more relevant to each format makes decision-making easier. -
Set your budget in advance
Decide how much you will bet in each session before you start. Avoid increasing your bets mid-match to recover losses. Betting is for entertainment, not as a source of income. -
Do not rush in live betting
In-play odds change fast — but rather than betting on every ball, wait for a clear situation before making a decision. -
Keep the number of selections in a multi bet limited
Combining many selections makes the potential return look attractive, but getting all of them right is difficult. Keeping it to two or three selections helps keep the risk under control. -
Read the rules first
It is important to know the conditions for bet cancellation, weather rules and other provisions. Reading the terms and conditions helps avoid confusion later.
